How TowMargin Calculates Towing Margin

Use this page to check how the calculator turns entered ratings, trip load, trailer weight, and tongue weight into a margin report.

TowMargin worksheet v2 is an entered-ratings worksheet for U.S. RV and travel trailer towing margin checks.

Calculation version

TowMargin worksheet v2 uses the numbers you enter. It does not look up official vehicle ratings, certify a setup, or replace door stickers, manuals, receiver labels, trailer labels, or certified scale readings.

Loaded trailer weight

If actual loaded trailer weight is entered, TowMargin uses that value.

If actual loaded trailer weight is blank, TowMargin estimates loaded trailer weight from trailer dry weight, trailer cargo, fresh water gallons times 8.34 lb, propane weight, and battery weight.

Tongue weight

If measured tongue weight is entered, TowMargin uses that value.

If measured tongue weight is blank, TowMargin estimates tongue weight from loaded trailer weight and the entered tongue weight percent. The default travel trailer estimate is 13%, and it should be replaced when you have a better measured value.

Payload and margin checks

Used payload includes driver and passengers, truck cargo, hitch or WDH hardware, other accessories, and tongue weight.

Payload remaining is payload rating minus used payload. Tow rating margin is manufacturer tow rating minus loaded trailer weight.

When the supporting inputs are entered, TowMargin also checks GVWR, GCWR, receiver tongue rating, receiver trailer rating, and trailer GVWR.

Status and close-margin rules

Payload rating is required before TowMargin can show a full payload-first status.

A result is over an entered limit when any completed check has a negative margin. Payload is close when less than 100 lb remains or less than 10% of payload remains. Other completed checks are close when less than 10% remains.

Source hierarchy

Use actual certified scale data when you have it. Otherwise use labels, door stickers, owner manuals, manufacturer towing guides, receiver labels, and trailer labels before user estimates.

Use clearly marked defaults only for estimated fields such as tongue weight percent. Do not invent missing payload rating, tow rating, GVWR, GCWR, receiver limits, loaded trailer weight, or tongue weight.

What this method does not decide

TowMargin does not simulate SAE J2807 tests, prove that a setup is lawful or suitable for road use, or decide insurance, warranty, or licensing questions.

It does not calculate GAWR or rear-axle load, tire load capacity, connected-rig axle pass/fail, WDH load transfer, braking performance, securement, route grade, weather, or road conditions.

Connected-rig scale readings can include tongue or pin weight on the truck axles; do not add the same tongue weight again when comparing axle readings outside this calculator.

A weight distribution hitch, air springs, receiver upgrade, ball mount, or accessory does not raise factory payload, GVWR, GAWR, GCWR, or manufacturer tow rating.
