Weight Distribution Hitch Towing Capacity

A weight distribution hitch can affect how load is distributed and may be required for a receiver's weight-distribution rating mode.

It does not increase factory payload, GVWR, GAWR, GCWR, manufacturer tow rating, or trailer GVWR.

If your setup only matches the lower weight-carrying mode on the receiver label, that lower receiver tongue or trailer limit is the number to enter.

If estimated tongue weight is 850 lb, that weight still counts in the payload worksheet along with passengers, cargo, hitch hardware, and accessories.

The hitch hardware itself also has weight, so it should be included in the truck load entries.

Use the receiver label and manufacturer documents for the ratings being entered.

Does a weight distribution hitch raise towing capacity?

Use in calculator

Count hitch or WDH hardware weight in payload and use receiver limits that match the label mode.

What changes and what does not increase

Factory payload
Unchanged A WDH does not raise payload, GVWR, GAWR, GCWR, or manufacturer tow rating.
Hitch hardware
Add to payload The hardware itself is part of the load carried by the truck.
Receiver mode
Check label Some labels show different limits for weight-carrying and weight-distribution use.

Before entering a higher receiver mode

  • Receiver label supports that mode
  • Hardware matches that mode
  • Tongue weight still counts in payload
  • Hitch hardware weight is included
